Acting on a very appreciated tip from G san, a fellow Shutter head, I was informed that Carrefour had the Nikon D700 and D3x on display at city mall. needless to say both are some of the best Nikon cameras money can buy.
The D700 is a great machine. It felt solid as a brick but felt surprisingly light (compared to the 40D). The Jet black finish of the Magnesium alloy body is very professional and cleverly accented by the trademark red Nikon inverted triangle under the index finger dial at the grip. Very ergonomic and very easy to use. Coming from a Canon machine, you immediately feel the difference. Nearly every function has a dedicated button that controls that specific function! Metering, AF-ON, Drive mode, Focus mode, are all easily accessed on the body instead of in menu or a combination of button and dial as Canon usually uses. Both approaches have their strengths but Nikon's approach is more easily accessible in my opinion.
Did not get the chance to get some pictures. Like an idiot, a forgot to bring my CF card! I am really regretting this now but I think I will have another trip maybe soon to get some test shots.
Coupled with a Nikkor AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 D ED telephoto lens, I didn't get the chance to test the snappy 51 Point AF system of the D700. But I got the chance to shoot a few burst at CH setting at 5 fps (which can be boosted to 8 fps with a MB-D10 Battery grip).
Now comes the shocker, the D700 coupled with the Nikkor AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 D ED is offered at JD3500 (USD4900) which is a VERY BIG difference compared to the Amazon price of JD 2000 (USD 2800) . Now i have talked about this ad nauseum but this JD 1500 (USD 2000) difference is JUST FREAKING RIDICULOUS!!!!
You pay the 1500 premium for the luxury of having the machine in your hand immediately.
Thanks, but no thanks! buying here is an act of financial stupidity! So much for promoting local consumer commerce!
Think this is bad, the Nikon D3x flagship DSLR was displayed on the floor as well. I didn't get the chance to Manhandle the beast of a DSLR that the d3x is (full frame at 24.1 MP with some of the best high ISO performance on the planet). The reason why??? look below!!
It is priced at JD 10,000!!!!!!!
Now the d3x is priced by Nikon at about USD 8000 (around JD 5600). Apparently it is too expensive to let prospective (yeah right! like any one would consider buying it.) customers to Manhandle. Even the ever benevolent Manhandling hands of Ukyou.
A whopping JD4400 price premium!!!!!
I can buy a regular D3 with this amount of money!!
To add insult to injury the D3x is coupled with the
Nikkor AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 D ED. which is like the worst lens to use with the King of resolution the D3x is !!!
After so many shocks myself and G san who was with me, were bamboozled and had to leave before we get a serious case of depression!
